Funny UCWbL Origin Stories

While some UCWbLers want to make sure that they dress to impress, other tutors are bold enough to remove their eyebrow during a job interview. Enjoy some funny anecdotes from some of our first-year UCWbLers!

Interview Stress

Job interviews can be stressful, but looking back on those small moments of panic can be funny in retrospect. “On my way to my interview, I was sitting on the train and when I stood up, I noticed that my shirt got really wrinkled,” says peer tutor Lexi S. “I thought I wasn’t gonna get the job because I looked messy. I almost went home and changed.” Lexi now laughs at the situation and her decision not to go back. “Good thing I didn’t, or I would’ve definitely been late,” she says.

Makeup Tutorial

Tutor Ava T. is a master of fancy eye makeup, so for the interactive demonstration at her interview, she decided to give a makeup tutorial. But Ava says her nerves increased when she realized she was actually going to wipe off a portion of her eyebrow during her job interview.

“I decided to demonstrate how to fill in your eyebrows. I came in with a full face of makeup, wiped off one eyebrow with a makeup wipe, then filled it in as I explained how to do it,” she says. “Every interviewer had an eyebrow pencil to practice on their hands as I went along.”

Halloween Horror

Amelia M.’s favorite story comes from this past Halloween. “During my first quarter working at the UCWbL, I worked the closing shift in the Loop on Wednesday nights. The other tutors and I started becoming friends,” she says. “We even began to wait until Sukaina was done with receptionist duties and rode the train back together.”

When it was time for Halloween, the group decided to celebrate. “From this, we began to get a group together to see The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Music Box Theatre on Halloween after our Wednesday shift,” says Amelia. “We used Riley M.’s Rocky Horror lipstick to draw the Virgin ‘Vs’ on half of our faces. We danced, screamed, sang, and stayed out way too late (at least those of us who weren’t too tired to leave early). It was so much fun getting to bond with everyone, and I’m so glad to have found such great people to surround myself with.”

Tomorrow, we’ll continue with more origin stories! Hope everyone is having a great week!

Happy writing!
