ScrawlS11E13 Secret Agent Tutoring at 826Chi

Hello Scrawl Nation!

This week we had the pleasure of bringing on fellow UCWbLer, Amber Slater, to share her experience volunteering at 826Chi.

This secret agent-themed writing and tutoring center is a free resource for kids all over the city. Amber has been a fan for years and was excited to finally volunteer in Chicago when she came to DePaul for graduate school.

Amber, Megan, and Brandon had a swell time talking about the non-profit writing center, 826Chi!

826 Chi has locations all over the country and has been in Chicago since 2005.

Listen to Amber describe why she loves 826Chi so much!

826Chi and the UCWbL have some of the same awesome tutoring strategies! Both writing centers encourage asking questions to the writers and believe that everyone is a writer… take a listen!

Is there a point when learning grammar discourages students’ creativity? Not at 826Chi, Amber said, where the students love workshops and are excited to write every day.

But what’s the difference between tutoring college students and young children? 826 Chi introduces the idea that writing isn’t just for school When kids are introduced to the idea that they can write without being forced to, they feel more comfortable writing in class. Then they feel freer to write later in life.

Amber even relates her minimalist tutoring strategy she uses at the UCWbL to 826Chi.
