Vampires, Zombies, and Ghosts! Oh, my! (Scrawl S11 E04)

Scrawl Nation! Before you listen to this week’s Scrawl episode, prepare yourself for ghastly humor and semi-frightening stories during this week’s horror episode!

This week, we were lucky enough to meet with Professor Jonathan Gross, who works in the English department and is teaching “The Gothic: Vampires, Zombies, and Frankenstein”  this quarter at DePaul. After a double round of Word of the Day and our first song by The Cranberries, we dove into a clip-style interview with Professor Gross.

The great thing about horror is how versatile it is, which Professor Gross expressed, and we expounded upon during the show. Our main discussions focused on how monsters reflect the fears around us, how vegetarianism and being vegan connect to horror, feminism in horror films, and the connections between fear and a lack of control.

Then we played America’s Favorite Game, “Horror-ble Taglines,” where Brandon read Theresa tag lines from famous horror films. Theresa actually guessed all of the tag lines correctly; see how many you can guess!

Of course, with Halloween coming up and a focus on horror, we finished the episode listening to “Thriller,” by Michael Jackson. We discussed the powerful roles of addressing a piece to the unnamed “you” character, and delved into ideas surrounding the multiple narrators.
