A New Era, A New Editor

Charlie, the assistant, indulges in literature.

Hello, writing community! My name is Selena, a graduate student in English Literature & Publishing with a not-so-secret love for all things literary. I spend a total of four hours on the road commuting every day I come to work at the DePaul University Writing Center—so you could say I’m committed!

I’m also a published poet and previously served as the managing editor for Jet Fuel Review, where I enjoyed crafting dynamic content and working closely with an incredible team. Additionally, I have presented at the International Writing Centers Association in 2023. As the new Publications Student Leader, I’m thrilled to bring fresh content to our blog. Specifically, I’d like to expand our Accessibility and New Media sections with content that feels both relevant and practical for our audience.

My Goals

For Accessibility, I’m interested in posts that highlight adaptable strategies for making writing more inclusive, such as creating accessible visuals and designing for neurodiverse readers. I envision a mini-series of posts exploring practical tools (like speech-to-text software for writers who need to hear their thoughts aloud).

In New Media, I’d love to introduce content that explores the intersection of digital culture and writing. For instance, posts could discuss how writers can explore ways multimedia formats like podcasts or video essays can expand the reach of traditional storytelling.

I hope these sections will empower writers to approach their craft with new awareness and confidence.

Let’s get to know each other more personally!

Charlie, sitting atop his throne of blankets.

  • Favorite type of writing? Poetry! Check out my poems here
  • Favorite font? Georgia
  • Weirdest bookmark? An eye doctor summary with my updated prescription
  • Current WIP? A poem about how I hate burning candles—they last longer if they just waft!

I’m excited about what this year will bring! Be sure to say hello to Charlie, my assistant.
