DePaul’s Banned Books Week Events (Doesn’t Include Banning Books)

Banned Books Week runs September 30 through October 6. Along with DePaul University Libraries we are celebrating free speech all week long! See the details after the jump.

Panel Discussion on Free Speech and Book-banning

Thursday, October 4
3 PM – 4:30 PM
Richardson Library, Room 115

Heather Jagman, Coordinator of Library Instruction, Rene De los Santos of the Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse Department, and our own Director of the UCWbL, Lauri Dietz will sit for a panel discussion about censorship and intellectual freedom.

Banned Books Readings

Tuesday, October 2 through Thursday, October 4
Lincoln Park Student Center Atrium
11 AM – 2:30 PM

We’ll host open readings of banned and challenged books. Feel like reading Ginsberg’s Howl out loud in the Student Center? Or what about a chapter from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone? Or my personal favorite–…And Tango Makes Three–a children’s book that tells the true story about a nontraditional family of penguins. There will be many other books available to read from as well, so whether you’re scheduled to staff the table or just passing through, have fun and step up to the mic.

Speaking of Speech…

Wednesday, October 3
Loop Student Center Atrium
10 AM – 3 PM
Show up and engage in a discussion about information accessibility and First Amendment rights.

What a wonderful way to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of Banned Books Week! And one more thing to note: Heather Jagman will be a guest on Scrawl Radio this coming Friday, September 28!
