Right now, the Outreach Tabling Team is hard at work making the DePaul community aware that the UCWbL will be hiring soon for the next school year. It’s so fun to reach out to tons of people– but what makes it even better is finding out which people applied because of those recruitment efforts!
Davis R. first learned of the Writing Center’s existence way back when he was touring the campus; however, it was tabling efforts that eventually convinced him to apply. “On my first tour at DePaul, the guide pointed it out and I immediately knew it would be a great experience to work here!” says Davis. “Later that year, I met a group tabling and we talked about writing and how I could fit at the Writing Center. I applied as soon as I could.”
Davis also had fun interviewing for this job: “In my interview, I taught the administrators how to make origami paper cranes but Matthew couldn’t figure it out!” he says.
Another tutor, Aidan F., was just starting to identify as a writer when he encountered the UCWbL’s hiring campaign. “One of the old heads, Jake or Megan I think, was in one of my classes and announced that the Writing Center was hiring,” he says. “I was just starting to consider myself ‘a writer’ at the time and thought this would be a great way to get involved with a community of other people who cared about the written word!”
Other tutors, including Lexi S. and Ava T., learned that the UCWbL was hiring through some of the online recruitment efforts. Lexi says, “I first heard about the UCWbL from a ‘we are hiring’ email! I actually didn’t know DePaul had a Writing Center until the end of my freshman year (clearly, I was missing out) and I really wanted to apply but I was too scared to.” She adds, “I waited a year and applied at the end of my sophomore year, and here I am!”
Ava found out about the UCWbL’s hiring efforts from the English Department’s graduate blog Ex Libris. “I came across a post on Ex Libris that peer writing tutors were needed at the UCWbL. I was intrigued immediately!” she says. “I was working full-time at a payroll company at the time and was planning on staying there once school started.” However, Ava didn’t want to pass this opportunity up, especially since it seemed to intersect with her long-term career goals. “I want to teach writing at the college level,” she says. “I finally decided to apply just a few days before the deadline, and I’m so happy I did!”
If there are any Outreach Tabling Team members reading this right now, I hope this motivates you to keep up the good work!
The final post in this series will come tomorrow!
Happy writing!
